The best Advent Calendars of 2022

Advent Calendars are something of a tradition in our family. There is something special about opening a little surprise in the lead up to Christmas. I love the idea of waking up every morning in December and uncovering a little treat. Advent calendars have come a long way in recent years and gone are the days of just chocolates and sweets. There are now beauty calendars, toys, teas and even treats of our four legged friends!

The tradition of Advent calendars dates to the mid-19th century, when when families would mark every day in December until Christmas Eve with a chalk marking. Originally, the four-week period known as Advent began as a time for converts to Christianity to prepare for baptism.

The first printed Advent calendar originated in Germany in the early 20th century with Gerhard Lang. When Gerhard was a little boy his mother made him a calendar with 24 small sweets attached to cardboard, one for each day leading up to Christmas.

Modern day Advent calendars take the form of many different shapes, sizes and mediums. There are even social media accounts dedicated to the lead up of Christmas.
