You’ve open your wedding invitation and see Morning Suit under the dress code – but what does that mean? Who is wearing suits first thing in the morning unless they're heading to the office? And what should women be wearing?

Morning Suit

Commonly seen on royal wedding invitations, a morning suit dress code, like the Jacket and Tie and Lounge Suit dress codes, are directed towards men rather than women.

Men should wear a tailcoat, waistcoat and striped trousers – whilst women should wear a very formal daytime dress with a hat. Morning suit dress codes should only apply to weddings and events beginning before 4:30pm.

What you should choose as your dress:

You will want to stick to a formal daytime dress with a hat. This is a formal dress code, despite the fact the event is held earlier in the day.

Dresses should not be too short or too revealing with an optional tailored jacket or blazer added. They may be worn with no jacket in summer but if so, should be modest with sleeves or at least not narrow straps.

As a general rule, if HRH Duchess Kate wouldn't wear it, you shouldn't either.

What you should choose as your hat:

Hats and fascinators are very common when it comes to Morning Suit dress codes - but not absolutely essential. For a wedding, hats are usually worn as they are deemed more formal.

If you want to accessorise:

Always go for a clutch - or a clutch sized bag. A clutch is always a more elegant and refined option than a clunky handbag.
