Decoding the Dress Code: What Should I Wear to a Cocktail Event?

A cocktail dress code is a common dress code for weddings and semi-formal events. Cocktail attire isn’t overly formal – but it’s a step above smart casual.

Cocktail

Traditionally, cocktail attire restricted women to dresses that were knee length, however, these days any length shorter than an evening gown may be considered appropriate for a cocktail event.

For men, a cocktail event is a time for suits – preferably dark (think navy or charcoal) in colour and accompanied with a white or muted colour shirt. Feel free to add a tie or pocket square if you like too.

A cocktail dress code is a little more flexible than other dress codes and it’s generally accepted that, if the event is in the morning or afternoon, guests can be a little freer with colours and patterns – but if it’s an evening event, it’s all about dark colours and muted tones.

If you want to wear a dress:

A cocktail dress code doesn't mean you have to wear a dress - but it is an easy option if you're stuck for ideas. You want to steer clear of daytime fabrics like cotton - but don't go as far as wearing a ballgown - find the middle ground.

A cocktail dress falls from just above the knee to just below the knee. You want to wear something that is formal - without looking like you're going to a ball - and not something that's too short that you'd feel embarrassed wearing in front of your boss or grandmother.

If you want to wear a skirt:

Opt for a sleek pencil skirt or tailored A-line skirt - paired with a nice blouse.

If you want to accessorise:

Always go for a clutch - or a clutch sized bag. A clutch or mini shoulder bag is always more elegant and refined. I love to use clutches to add a bit of extra sparkle or personality to my outfits.

If you want to wear pants:

Forget the jeans! Instead opt for tailored pants.
