As wedding season approaches, one common dress code that can sometimes leave guests scratching their heads is "black tie." Black tie weddings are known for their formal and elegant ambiance, and it's essential to dress appropriately to show respect to the couple and the occasion. But what exactly does black tie attire entail? Whether you're a man or a woman, here's your guide on what to wear to a black tie wedding.

For Men:

When it comes to black tie attire, men should aim for a classic and refined look. Here are some key elements to consider:

  1. Tuxedo: A well-fitted tuxedo is the cornerstone of black tie attire. Opt for a traditional black or midnight blue tuxedo with a satin or grosgrain lapel. Avoid wearing a regular suit or a tuxedo in non-traditional colours.

  2. Dress Shirt: Choose a crisp, white, or off-white dress shirt with a pleated or bibbed front. French cuffs with cufflinks add an extra touch of sophistication.

  3. Bow Tie: A black or midnight blue bow tie is the go-to option for a black tie wedding. Make sure to learn how to tie it properly or opt for a pre-tied one.

  4. Cummerbund or Vest: A cummerbund or vest is a classic accessory that adds a polished look to your ensemble. Choose a matching color with your tuxedo, preferably in silk or satin fabric.

  5. Dress Shoes: Black patent leather or highly polished leather shoes are the ideal choice for black tie events. Avoid wearing casual shoes or loafers.

  6. Accessories: Keep it minimal and elegant with simple cufflinks, a formal watch, and a pocket square.

For Women:

Women have more flexibility in their black tie wedding attire, but it's still important to maintain a formal and sophisticated look. Here are some guidelines to follow:

  1. Evening Gown: A full-length evening gown in a luxurious fabric like silk, satin, chiffon, or velvet is the classic choice for black tie events. Opt for dark or jewel-toned colors like black, navy, burgundy, or emerald green for a timeless and elegant look. Do not wear white. It is reserved for the bride!

  2. Neckline: Choose a modest neckline like a V-neck, sweetheart, or boat neck that is appropriate for a formal occasion. Avoid plunging necklines or revealing cutouts.

  3. Silhouette: Look for a gown with a flattering silhouette that complements your body shape. A-line, sheath, or column dresses are popular choices for black tie events.

  4. Length: A full-length gown that grazes the floor is the most traditional option, but a formal cocktail dress that falls below the knee can also be acceptable. Avoid dresses that are too short or too casual.

  5. Fabric: Opt for high-quality fabrics that drape well and have a luxurious feel. Avoid casual fabrics like cotton or jersey and instead choose silk, satin, or chiffon.

  6. Accessories: Add the finishing touches to your look with elegant accessories like statement jewelry, a clutch purse, and heels. Keep in mind that your accessories should complement your gown, not overpower it.

General Tips for both Men and Women:

  1. Follow the Dress Code: Black tie attire is formal, and it's important to adhere to the dress code specified on the wedding invitation. Avoid dressing too casually or too casually, as it may be seen as disrespectful to the couple and the event.

  2. Fit Matters: Make sure your attire fits well and is tailored to your body shape. Ill-fitting clothing can detract from the overall look and feel of your outfit. There is nothing worse than having to pull up your strapless dress all night because it doesn’t fit properly.

  3. Be Mindful of the Venue: Consider the wedding venue and the weather and dress appropriately for both.

  4. Be Comfortable! Make sure you feel good in whatever you are wearing, there is nothing worse than being uncomfortable, it will ruin your evening.
